The rebels raped, tortured and amputated citizens limbs with machetes. The AFRC(Koroma's group) was backed by the Liberian president. Liberia supported such actions for the diamond fields of sierra leone. In 1998, Liberian mercenaries invaded to support Koromas militants. President kabbah regained control and in 2002 the civil war was declared over. An estimated 50,000 had been killed.
